The UAE marked National Environment Day on February 4, with its leaders reaffirming their dedication to sustainability and environmental preservation.

Leadership’s Vision for Sustainability

His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, emphasized the nation's commitment to sustainable progress and global climate action.

“On National Environment Day, we draw inspiration from our history of sustainable progress and renew our determination to protect the environment and preserve its resources for future generations,” he stated on X (formerly Twitter).

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, urged individuals to adopt eco-friendly behaviors to safeguard the country’s environmental heritage.

“National Environment Day is an annual occasion aimed at reinforcing sustainability principles, preserving the environment, and raising awareness among new generations,” he said.

Theme: ‘Our Heritage … Our Future’

This year’s theme aligns with 2025 being declared the ‘Year of Community’, highlighting the role of society in preserving natural resources and shaping a sustainable future.

Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, underscored the importance of community-driven environmental action.

“The National Environment Day offers a valuable opportunity for all members of the community to actively engage in the UAE’s climate and environmental work.”

She emphasized the UAE’s rich biodiversity, sustainable agriculture, and conservation efforts, urging citizens to participate in environmental initiatives.

A Legacy of Sustainability

The late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, the UAE’s Founding Father, famously said:

“He who does not know his past cannot make the best of his present and future.”

This philosophy continues to guide the country’s environmental policies. Traditional eco-friendly practices, such as sustainable farming, falconry, and wind towers (‘barajeel’), remain deeply embedded in Emirati culture.

Upcoming Initiatives

Leading up to World Environment Day on June 4, the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment will host community events, workshops, and awareness programs.

Dr. Amna encouraged all citizens to take part, stating:

“Our actions today will shape the future. The environmental achievements will become a national legacy that future generations will proudly carry forward.”

The UAE continues to position itself as a global model for sustainability, blending tradition with innovation to address environmental challenges.
